We all know the 4 C’s (carat, colour, clarity, cut) already. They determine the quality of a diamond, but the cut is considered to be the most important. Especially with the purchase of a solitaire ring, when only one diamond attracts attention. The cut is in fact responsible for the brilliance. Thus, a good cut can give a diamond of lower quality a stunning look. Because, let’s be honest, we all want a solitaire ring that sparkles nicely.

The difference between the cut and the shape
It is interesting to note that the term ‘cut’ is used in two different ways. Many use cut when describing a diamond shape, for example a princess cut solitaire ring. Although the term is commonly used in this way, it is not really correct. The true definition of cut is not the diamond shape, but the size, the polishing and the symmetry of a diamond.
When a specialist will assess the abrasive quality of a diamond, he looks at three important aspects: brilliance (the reflection of the white light at the surface and in the diamond), fire (the flashes of colour, caused by the dispersion of the light in the diamond) and scintillation (the flashes of light and dark (glare) when the diamond moves).
As with clarity and colour, the cut is assessed by a grading system:
- Very ideal: reflects the maximum amount of light
- Ideal: reflects almost all the light that falls on the diamond
- Very good: reflects about as much light as those with an ideal cut
- Good: reflects enough light
- Fair: reflects a reasonable amount of light
- Poor: reflects a small amount of light
