Light clean: toothpaste
If you are looking to just freshen up a ring and give it a superficial clean, then toothpaste is the right product. The best toothpaste to use is the chalky type, not the gel types, you use a bit of it on a soft toothbrush and brush the ring with it. Then you just rinse the ring with lukewarm water and dry it with a lint-free cloth to avoid any little hair on the ring.
It is great for a quick clean of your jewellery, although it is not really as effective as other substances may be.
Deep clean: dishwashing detergent
For a more thorough home cleaning technique, we would recommend using a mild dish washing detergent with water and a toothbrush to gently brush the jewel. Mild detergent is a little more effective and seems to go through the little holes and angles of a design more easily.
Again, just rinse with water and dry with a lint-free cloth. It is a more durable cleaning process but if you want a more lasting cleanse, then we recommend taking your ring to a jewellers.
Long-lasting clean: professional
A jeweller is your best option for a proper deep cleanse of your jewel. Jewellers use special equipment, usually ultrasonic, to clean jewels. The only thing you will have to be cautious about is that not all gemstones can be ultrasonic cleaned because of their lower hardness or treatments they may have had, which renders them more fragile.
The Mohs scale of mineral hardness gives you the scale of hardness and scratch resistance of gemstones and you can be certain that anything below 7 cannot be cleaned with this type of equipment.
Diamonds, sapphire and rubies are usually safe bets, with a 10 and 9 respectively on Mohs scale.
There are of course gemstones that even if they are 7 or above in the scale, that cannot be treated, if you have any doubts, refer to the jeweller.
