If you are looking for something different than a traditional colourless diamond Solitair, you will love coloured diamonds. They are becoming increasingly popular. When valuing a coloured diamond, it is the intensity of its colour that determines its value. Coloured diamonds are even cut with a different mindset. The cutter will always try to maximize the color intensity of the finished stone. Clarity is of lesser importance. A slightly coloured diamond with a low saturation and thus no intense coloring will have a lower value. Depending on the depth and intensity of the colour, the value of these diamonds will go up. A nicely coloured diamond will be quite expensive and will usually be a significant cost. Of course, you will spare no expense to woo the woman of your dreams and this mentality is the perfect start for an eternity spent together. Pink diamond engagement rings are most popular, followed closely by yellow diamonds. In principal any fancy coloured diamond will make your future significant other say yes.
To grade coloured diamonds, GIA developped the GIA Colored Diamond Grading System, that quantifies the hue, tone and saturation of the coloured diamond. Hue defines the colour, red green, blue or yellow. Tone defines the lightness or darkness of the colour. And finally saturation determines the depth of the colour, faint, intense or vivid… There are a total of about 27 tints and these are often a combination of two or more colours like orange yellow or purple pink. To describe the tone and saturation the addition of Fancy Light, Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid, Fancy Dark or Fancy Deep.
