Why Are Blue Diamonds So Rare and Valuable?
Are you curious about what makes blue diamonds command such extraordinary prices? These mesmerizing gems rank among the world's rarest precious stones, with their distinctive blue hue created when boron particles become trapped in the diamond's crystal lattice during formation.
Only about 200,000 diamonds worldwide are classified as blue diamonds, with deep blue specimens being exceptionally scarce. Their value has consistently increased over the past decade due to growing investment interest and limited supply. A 0.5-carat blue diamond averages $26,280, while fancy vivid blue diamonds larger than 3 carats can fetch over €900,000 per carat.
Famous blue diamonds include the allegedly cursed 45.52-carat Hope Diamond, the 31.06-carat Wittelsbach-Graff (which sold for $80 million), and the mysterious 27.64-carat Heart of Eternity, whose current owner remains undisclosed.

- The Wittelsbach-Graff diamond: This diamond was also mined in India in the 1600s and weighs 31.06 carats. Throughout history, the Wittelsbach-Graff had been part of both the Austrian and Bavarian crown jewels. The current owner is a former emir of Qatar who paid more than $80 million for it.
- The Heart of Eternity: This blue diamond of 27.64 carats was found in the Premier Mine in South Africa and was shown to the public by De Beers in January 2000 at the London Millennium Dome. Whoever owns it currently is a well-kept secret.
