Why is a diamond so hard?

Diamonds are formed 140 to 250 kilometres below the Earth's surface, where carbon is compressed under extreme pressure at a temperature of 1,000 degrees Celsius. That is the reason why a diamond is so hard. It is even the hardest raw material to be found on Earth. In volcano eruptions, rough diamonds are carried with magma and pushed to the surface.
